We elect our representatives to see that the government, creates and implements policies that benefits us “the voters”. In my views and majority of the Albertan’s (not affiliated with political parties) will agree with me, the role of opposition is to make government’s accountable. Most of the time, I don’t see opposition party doing its part i.e., protecting our interest by making government accountable. What I see is opposition leadership opposing government policies to score points without giving alternative policies that will benefit us “the voters”.
Take for example Carbon Tax/Levy in Alberta (Canada). Government of Alberta and Canadian Government implemented their environment policy to reduce GHG emission by imposing Carbon Tax/Levy on Albertan’s. I believe in the objectives of the policy and want to see that it is fulfilled. The opposition party (The Conservatives) are opposed to the Carbon tax/levy. Conservatives are using it as an election issue and pretending to be standing up for Albertan’s. They are exploiting the financial hardship of Canadian’s specially Albertan’s for their political purpose.
Let me give you an example, regular gas price rapidly increases overnight in Edmonton, between 10 – 20 cents/liter every fortnight. These increases have a sudden impact on our pocket book, creates financial hardship and increases cost of every thing we buy. The regular gas price at the pump was under 90 cents/liter at the beginning of the month (on January 20, 2019 was 86.9 cents/liter) last week it was 105.9 cents today is 101.9 cents. Note that we have 6.72 cents/liter Carbon levy. There are other taxes added to the fuel price too. We know the purpose of the Carbon Levy/tax, but what are the purpose of other taxes? Why no one is talking about the rapid jump in the fuel cost at the pump? Is rapid jump in the fuel cost not increasing the cost of transportation! is rapid jump in the fuel cost not impacting the cost of goods that we buy! Is rapid jump in the fuel cost not increasing the business expenses!
Another example, I use ATCO Gas to heat my home in Edmonton. Table below shows my last eight months heating bill. You will notice, my average gas charge is $13.55, and I pay $71.65 as an overhead that also incudes taxes. This is 529% (71.65/13.55 in percentage) of my gas charges, a huge overhead cost. Why we are not talking about the huge overhead cost that we pay on our energy bills? Is huge overhead cost not increasing our financial hardship! Is huge overhead cost not increasing the business expenses!
You can calculate your overhead using your own heating bill like my billing example above.
Let’s make our elected representatives accountable, and make them to serve us “the voters”. Let’s ask every candidate looking for our support, the following questions on social media, and when every they come to our doors looking for our vote: –
- Why we have rapid jump in fuel price? as a candidate do you see this an issue, and what you will do about it!
- Why we have huge overhead on our heating bills? as a candidate do you see this an issue and what they will do about it!
It does not matter to me what political stripes you wear, as a citizen I want my government to provide me with financial stability, safety & security and better governance.
